Wildcard's Nightmare

You drift off into a fitful sleep.

You have a strange dream (well, no stranger than normal).

You are in a ship at sea. There is a terrible storm raging. The crests are 50 feet high. The sky is dark grey and occasionally punctuated by flashes of lightning. The ship lurches in the waves and spray soaks the deck. You try to make your way to the bridge but it's difficult. You get to the door but it's locked. You struggle with the door but it won't budge. There is a figure inside with its back to you at the helm, calmly turning the ship this way and that. You yell at the figure to let you in, but it won't. You bang on the glass and eventually it shatters. You unlatch the door and fling it aside. You go up to the helmsman and grab him by the shoulder and yell something, but you cannot even hear the sound of your voice over the crashing waves. The helmsman is you. The other you smiles back at you with a cold pity and shakes its head. Its face starts melt and the melting face runs down on to your hand. You yank your hand away and soon the entire body is dissolved on the floor. Outside the bridge window, you see a massive crest rising. You scream but your scream is cut short as the wave crashes down, breaks the window and water flows in. The ship is sinking rapidly, you can see the bubbles rising up above you as the roof is shorn off. You try to swim free, but your feet have somehow melted into the deck and you are going down fast. The sea presses against you and what little light remains fades into blackness as you sink faster and faster. Your ribs crack and the sea squeezes the last of your breath out of you.

Darkness.

A voice says...

...

Darkness.

Voices whisper all around you, what they say is just out of reach.

You stumble around in the darkness, looking for something but you can't find it.

A voice speaks to you:

Voice: Who are you?

Martin: I am Martin Gideon!

Voice: Incorrect. Who are you?

Martin: I don't understand.

Voice: Understanding is a three-edged sword. And so it begins.

Martin: What do you mean?

Voice: Ah, you seek meaning. Then listen to the music, not the song.

Martin: What do you want?

Voice: Never ask that question.

Martin: Why are you here?

Voice: I was never away. For the first time your mind is quiet enough to hear me.

Martin: Who are you?

Voice: That is irrelevant.

Martin: Why is that?

Voice: I will teach you.

Martin: What?

Voice: About you. Until you are ready.

Martin: Ready for what?

Voice: To fight legends. When the long night comes, return to the end of the beginning. I will be there.

Martin: Where?

Voice: We will meet in the hour of longing, in the place where no shadows fall.

Martin: What should I do until then?

Voice: See. Hear.

Martin: I don't understand.

A Voice says...

Everything becomes brighter as the light sucks the darkness away.

...

You are in a room. There is red furniture sitting on a red floor, surrounded by red walls and ceiling. Red candles on red end tables flank the red velvet couches, facing each other. A deep male voice - that you recognize as your father's speaks.

Lewis Gideon: Through the darkness of futures past, The magician longs to see: Once chance out between two worlds...Fire..walk with me

...and the candles burn out, throwing the room into darkness.

Crazed male voice: I'll catch you with my death bag. You may think I've gone insane, but I promise, I will kill again!!

Lewis Gideon: This is his true face. But few can see it. The gifted... and the damned.

Martin: Which am I? Never mind, stupid question.

The lights come on again and the room is painted entirely blue.

Lewis Gideon: Someone is looking for you. Someone on the other side.

Martin: Who who is looking for me?

Lewis: Beware the beast; it has many shapes. Sometimes it puts on a friendly face.

Martin: What, you mean a werewolf? Jean?

Lewis: Evil walks among you. But the darkest evil is still trapped. There is a calm between the storms. Use it.

And finally, a sinister voice speaks and you hear an unearthly scream.

You awaken.
